This is the second annual East Lancashire Research Journal and is produced as a result of the coordination of research activity by the Research Committee within East Lancashire Institute of Higher Education (ELIHE). The document and the associated web site (www.east-lancashire-research.org.uk) are produced to disseminate research output within ELIHE and Blackburn College in particular as well as more widely to East Lancashire and beyond. The Research Committee has four members, one appointed from each of the four main Schools; Trevor Green1of the East Lancashire Business School, Stephen Kirkup2of the School of Science and Technology, Stephen Pickles3of the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and Barry Powell4of the School of Law, Health and Community Studies. I am grateful to those who have contributed to the sum of our research at ELIHE, particularly the authors of the Academic Reports. Recently the Research Committee has been working on funding applications and I would like to thank Stefano Pacelli, Blackburn College Challenge Funds Manager, for his work and support.Over the last year, the ELIHE research effort has enjoyed significant encouragementand support. I would like to acknowledge the support received from Ian Clinton, Blackburn College Principal, Chris Osborne, Blackburn College Vice-Principal, and Helen Mathers, Dean of ELIHE. Finally I would like to thank the ELIHE management team for their continued support of the Research Committee in its objective of making research an increasingly important part of our work....Read more

The Higher Education Academy (HEA) accreditation scheme and associated UK ProfessionalStandards Framework (UKPSF) for the professional recognition of teaching was introduced in2003. There are now over 92,000 fellows of the HEA in the UK, over 1,000 in Australia and justover 100 in NZ, with a further 1,600 in many other countries across the world. The recentProductivity Commission report recommended that NZ develop ‘frameworks of professionalstandards for tertiary teaching’ and Ako Aotearoa is now supporting sector-wide debate on thispoint. The panel members will outline their experiences of implementing the accreditationframework in different contexts, and invite discussion and participation from the audience on futuredevelopments in NZ.
