I have a new Windows 11 Desktop and I am trying to add my ATT.NET and BELLSOUTH.NET email accounts into my new PC's MAIL app. I had no issues with Gmail accounts but when I try to add the ATT.NET or the BELLSOUTH.NET accounts, it hangs at the CONNECTING TO SERVICES window.

We'd be glad to help you set up your email, marlene1334.

Visit our Email Login and Solutions article to troubleshoot your mail client. Go to the section for 3rd party clients:

  • Test using webmail - if you are able to sign in to your email via the web, the issue points to the app or mailbox you are using.

  • Mailboxes- we recommend using the latest version. Updates and changes may prevent it from working properly.

  • Rebuild Mailbox profile - in some instances, rebuilding the profile fixes some issues. You may lose email doing this!

  • Change your settings from POP to IMAP.

  • Reset your secure key - this has helped resolve issues in the past, especially when signing into another client or troubleshooting your current one.

Please keep in mind that AT&T does not officially support or troubleshoot mailboxes/clients like Outlook.

If you're setting up your email on Currently, the official site for AT&T Mail, let us know, and we'll help you troubleshoot.

I have the exact same issue after a fresh install of windows 11 on a laptop. I even tried adding my yahoo (AT&T) email to a computer that has the account working already with the same result. I also tried with an old yahoo.com address (to get AT&T out of the equation), and the same thing happens. This is a Yahoo/windows (noy AT&T) mail problem, as they've been playing whack-a-mole for years. Yahoo doesn't like windows mail because that can't serve up ads, so they just keep changing the rules. Getting Yahoo mail to work properly with windows mail has been problematic for years... from un-decoded emails, to emails not being downloaded at all, to general sync problems, and it's frustrating as (Edited per community guidelines). I want things to work with windows mail because I love it's simple, uncluttered approach to managing email. I have an exchange account and a gmail account that work flawlessly with windows mail.

Yes, I tried everything other than changing from POP to IMAP, since that's not an option when choosing Yahoo to set up my email. I'm not a rookie with this stuff, and I even went so far as to do a fresh install of an older image of windows 11. It was an image that I KNOW worked when setting up Yahoo in the past. So something on Yahoo's end or Microsoft's end has changed. My money is on Yahoo, since they've been the ones throwing up roadblocks at every turn to cripple windows mail. Some third party apps (ie. BlueMail) work fine but all they really do is mimic a web browser, plus they are slow as heck (no need to edit that one). Now, I can set up Yahoo as IMAP using the advanced setup method, but I have to generate a secure mail key as a password, and emails from Yahoo come through even more jumbled, if they download at all, so that just magnifies problems I already have with Yahoo. So, in a nutshell I have tried to set up Yahoo mail on three different computers, all of which have been able to set up Yahoo in the past. I've also tried with two entirely different builds of Windows on two of those systems, with the same result. I also tried setting it up at a cafe with their wifi in case something on my network was blocking it. Yahoo needs to undo what they did, or Microsoft needs to find a solution again. So... I sincerely doubt that it has anything to do with my email settings. Also because of all these issues with Yahoo, I am slowly moving my correspondence and website logins to Gmail, and once I'm satisfied all of the important stuff have been migrated, I'll delete Yahoo/AT&T email for good. Yahoo really knows how to retain customers... it's no wonder Google trampled them 20+ years ago. LOL

I tried again, this time using the SECURE MAIL KEY for my email account password, instead of the email password I was using before. It worked for all my ATT.NET and BELLSOUTH.NET email accounts.

Thanks for that. I got it working that way as well, but the original problem remains. The secure mail key is one thing, but I need it to work with a username and MY password for a few of reasons. One of which is adding the account in this way keeps windows mail from offering up the new Outlook as a replacement. Since that's been offered, I've been switching when I get a batch of yahoo emails that are just a mass of HTML code. Yes, I could go to Yahoo's webmail to view, but I prefer not to give Yahoo that satisfaction. Yahoo changed something in the last two weeks that messed up the login from windows mail, and now Microsoft needs to fix it... again. This cat and mouse with Yahoo has been going on since Windows 10. My Exchange and Gmail accounts both work perfectly with Windows Mail.

I’m having the EXACT same problem(June 2023) I can add my wife’s @yahoo.com, but with my email that’s @bellsouth.net, it goes to ‘connecting to a service’ and it just stays a blank screen. My email was working fine on my home PC, but I got a new laptop (Windows 11) and tried to install my email on it(with no success), then when I went to my home PC(which was working fine) and my email was gone and no longer worked on it! Got Same results as on laptop when I tried to re-add. Very Frustrating! (And, Yes I tried everything Aminah suggested)
