I was a former SLP. Annie Best, my co-SLP mistreated me and I was let go for reporting. I was the only black staff member in the school. Scare tactics, micro-managed me, questioned my competence, and met me with silent treatment repeatedly. We shared a small room together, so working next to her became difficult. If I ever made a mistake or asked for help, Annie would threaten that my job was on the line; instead of helping me. The diagnostician, Fabiola Diaz, would only relay info to me through Annie, never acknowledged me as a person. The only time I was acknowledged was to receive harsh criticism on my written reports, or meeting agenda notes. I eventually felt I had to watch my back at all times. Annie met everyone with a smile, while treating me this way behind the scenes. It was harassment! I reported Annie's behavior to Brenda Oksanen of the district and was immediately let go! It makes me wonder why they are unable to keep the 2nd SLP position filled.

Most of the academic resources are great but the teachers severely disrupt learning. Often they are either brand new (lots of turn over) or poor at teaching overall. Many teachers have been fired on multiple occasions for their conduct with students, and/or reported to the assistant principals. The facilities are well managed and obviously cost enough money to be very nice. Overall the safety is great and we have multiple security guards to deal with trouble students, (though often let most things go with only a warning). The school has its issues but for the most part is very well put together and with more testing towards its teachers would really excel.

While my experience at Wylie East High School has been up and down depending on the year. I do feel I have received a very good education. I do think there is a lack of proper communication with students from the administration as well as proper guidelines on the expectations of students attending this school. I also struggled with getting the help that was needed for me to achieve the goals I had set for myself. I do feel I had ample clubs I could join and ways to be involved in the school. Many teachers I had did have a big impact on my high school career. I also made many friends but I do look forward to spreading my wings and experiencing the next chapter in my life as a college student.
