FUn TUESDAY, APRIL 22, 1997 DAYTON DAILY NEWS OBITUARY Fairborn detective David P. Eckert dies The 25-year veteran of the department was known as being both sensitive and diligent when probing crimes. By Lou Grieco DALTON DAILY NEWS Detective David P. Eckert, a 25-year veteran of the Fairborn Police Department, died Monday at the James Cancer Institute in Columbus. He was 48.

Mr. Eckert, who had served as the department's juvenile detective since 1990, earned statewide recognition in 1992 from David dEckert the Ohio Victims of Crime Compensation Program, when Ohio Supreme Court Justice Thomas J. Moyer presented the Law Enforcement Silver Star Award. "He was just a stand-up guy," said Fairborn Chief Anthony Slifka. "He was good at what he did and people loved him." The detective was known as being both sensitive and diligent when investigating crimes, particularly sex crimes against children.

The year before he won the Silver Star, Mr. Eckert produced a 100 percent conviction rate on all 15 felony child sexual abuse cases he investigated. Mr. Eckert had battled lymphoma for years. Friends and co-workers set up a fund to help finance a $200,000 bonemarrow transplant for Mr.

Eckert on Feb. 25, after he was denied insurance coverage for the procedure. Donations can be sent to: Dave Eckert Cancer Treatment Fund, Key Bank, 120 N. Detroit Xenia, 4 45385. Slifka said that Mr.

Eckert never lost his warmth and sense of humor, despite the difficulties he faced. "The guy just maintained the fight all the way to the end," Slifka said. "I don't think I could have done what he did and kept up that attitude." In 1966, while a senior at Chaminade High School in Dayton, Mr. Eckert thought he wanted to be a journalist. He started in the wire photo room of the Dayton Daily News, and then wrote sports stories.

Following Navy duty in Vietnam, he spent several years as the police reporter for the Fairborn Daily Herald. He joined the Fairborn Police Department in 1972 and served in the patrol section until he was appointed detective in 1989. Mr. Eckert is survived by his wife, Connie, and four children, Brad, Ben, Amy and Andy. Fairborn police said funeral arrangements are expected to be completed today.
