Is Penn State NSO mandatory? ›

All new first-year students to Penn State must participate in New Student Orientation (NSO).

Where do I find my nine-digit Penn State ID number? Your student ID number is included in all letters you receive from Penn State's Undergraduate Admissions Office. Please visit your MyPennState account to view your offer of admission and find your ID number. Your nine-digit Penn State ID number begins with a nine (9).

Obtaining Your Penn State id+ Card

You can request your id+ card online, by submitting a headshot photo and uploading a valid government-issued photo identification. The photo must meet the photo requirements listed on this page to be approved. Your id+ card will be mailed to your permanent home address.

During NSO, you will meet with students, faculty, and staff; begin to develop academic and co-curricular goals; become familiar with campus resources; and schedule courses for your first semester to begin putting your academic plan into action.

Parents & family members will attend some sessions with their student, but most sessions will be attended separately.

We strongly encourage all applicants to complete the personal statement as part of the application submission. All first-year applicants for all majors are eligible to apply test-optional. Note: Transfer, adult learners, and nondegree-to-degree applicants are not required to submit exam scores.

How do I request a refund? Students who are graduating or withdrawing from the University should fill out the LionCash refund request form. Approved refund requests will only be issued via a check made payable to the cardholder and will be mailed to the permanent home address on record.
