PEOPLE IN SPORTS 12 ca 3 NTERNATIONAL MARATHON AP A So-So finish Japanese identical twins Shigeru's So, left, and Takeshi So share a first-place finish in the Peking Marathon with a time of 2:20.23: .4 Lack of fans costs 1 big-leaguers plenty With baseball's regular season over, let's look at how some players with attendance clauses fared. 1. It was not a good year. for attendance at Comiskey Park, thus, it was not so good for some of the Chicago White Sox. Harold Baines, who last year earned an extra $14,795 based on attendance, received nothing.

Floyd Bannister's bonus plummeted from $50,000 to $5,000. Carlton Fisk plunged from $140,000 to $50,000. Tom Paciorek, on the other hand, benefitted from his midseason trade to the New York Mets. If he had remained with the Chisox, he would have earned no attendance bonus. With the Mets, who drew more than a million more fans than Chicago, he qualified for a bonus of $137,500.

An Ron Cey of the Chicago Cubs earned the highest attendance bonus for the second straight season, a again receiving $500,000. George Foster got $200,000 from the Mets and Steve Garvey and Rich Gossage $150,000 each from San Darrell Evans earned $75,000 with Detroit and Jody Davis $45,000 with the Cubs. Reggie Jackson got richer because the California Angels did. Reggie's attendance bonus, which plunged from $203,680 in 1982 to $1,498 last year, was $83,713.50 in 1985. The most optimistic player was Mike Hargrove of Cleveland.

He has a clause calling for bonuses of $25,000 each if the team draws 1.4 million, 1 1.7 million and 2 million. The Indians attracted 655,181 this year, lowest attendance in the majors. No laughing matter Followers of the Yankees will recall that when New York played at Baltimore on Sept. 21, shortstop Bobby Meacham was tossed out of the game for laughing. Now, it turns out that whether Meacham's private joke was a laughing matter, his ejection was far from it at least to the American League, who brought in umpire Joe Brinkman for a chat.

Yankee rookie Rex Hudler trying to steal second base, was called out by Brinkman. When Meacham went to his position the next inning, he looked at Brinkman and then "put my head down and chuckled." Brinkman's response, Meacham said, was, "What the heck are you laughing at?" To which Meacham replied, "You." That was the end of his workday. "Brinkman's been talked to," said AL: President Bobby Brown. "What Meacham did was hit a nerve that was a little more exposed than it perhaps should have been." What would he think of Mel Turpin? Yang Jun of the Chinese national basketball team has a listed height of 2.2 meters (about 7-2), which makes him a couple of inches taller than Patrick Ewing. But in a scrimmage against the Knicks last week, Yang had a rough encounter.

Ed Badger, the Boston Celtics' assistant who is working with the Chinese, advised Yang that in the next game he could expect even more physical play from Darryl Dawkins of the Nets. "Darryl's 285," said Badger, trying to give Jun an idea of his next weighty opponent. Yang went wild. Badger asked the team's interpreter to find out what was wrong. After a brief conversation, Yang was calmed, and the interpreter told Badger, "He thought you meant Dawkins' height was 2.85 meters." And that converts to nine feet, four inches.

Quotable. Dallas Cowboys' President Tex Schramm, on the chances of getting other teams' approval to use instant replays: "I thought we had a good chance to pass it until I read a story somewhere that this is my pet project. Now, they'll never buy it." GLAD YOU ASKED Q- Cleveland fans say, "Give us a winner and we'll be there." But I'm not so sure. Could you give the Indians' attendance for 1948 and 1954? Larry Wesche, Napoleon, 0. A The Indians drew 2,620,627 fans in 1948 and 1,335,472 in 1954, their last two pennant winning years.
