THE PLAIN DEALER MONDAY, APRIL 15, 1996 A Talented 'Jane Eyre' actress guards her privacy By GRAHAM FULLER NEW YORK TIMES The actress Charlotte Gainsbourg looked wistfully at a lock of Charlotte Bronte's hair, woven into a mourning bracelet, at the Pierpoint Morgan Library's "Art of the Brontes" exhibition. Gainsbourg was visiting New York to promote "Jane' Eyre," which opened Friday. The movie 1s based, of course, on Bronte's novel about an impoverished governess who falls tempestuously in love with her brooding employer, Rochester, played by William Hurt. It wasn't, however, merely the sight of Charlotte Bronte's hair that moved Gainsbourg. Later that day, she acknowledged that she had kept a similar memento of her father, the singer, songwriter and actor Serge Gainsbourg, who died in 1991.

His death, she said, had been the defining moment in her life, "a black spot." Gainsbourg, 24, is sparing with such revelations. Thin and boyish, with a pale, oval face, she talks shyly about her 12-year film Film Live ADULT MOVIES 16500 Open 24 Brookpark Hrs. 267-7979 3 NEW RELEASES RUN FEATURES AVON LAKE before Bargain 6 $3 PM 933-6447 "OUVER DECISION (R) 9:15 "JAMES GIANT (G) (R) 'MRS. Although established in European cinema, she is scarcely a marquee name in the United States, where only the 1989 film "The Little Thief" brought her attention. And unlike the celestial beauties of French cinema who grace magazine covers, "I don't really have the looks," she said.

With French as her first language, she approaches some English words hesitatingly, yet in a perfect BBC accent. Her Frenchness was never discussed with her when she was being cast as Jane Eyre. This "Jane Eyre," directed by Franco Zeffirelli with great fidelity to the book, also stars Joan Plowright as Mrs. Fairfax (Rochester's housekeeper) and Anna Paquin as the young Jane.

Previous screen Janes have included Virginia Bruce in a forgotten 1934 film, Joan Fontaine in the 1944 version that starred Orson Welles as Rochester, and Susannah York in a 1971 British television movie. Gainsbourg's reticence and modesty must have recommended her for the role of Bronte's socially maladroit heroine. Zeffirelli said he had been struck by Gainsbourg's ability to assume the character instantly. when she auditioned for him in London. "That day I saw seven girls," he said.

"Some were competent, some were not. One was extraordinary, but she was constructing a performance, calculating the effects, creating artifice, while Charlotte was absolutely straightforward, and, God knows, she wasn't very encouraging to look at at that moment. She wore little makeup. She just wanted to be herself, and that's how she got the role." Gainsbourg said she related to this intense feeling that Jane has repressed," Zeffirelli said. "In the moment when she melts, when Rochester kisses her, but before she surrenders, she's so moving.

She's smelling the perfume of this man that is slowly conquering her." Hurt worked closely with Gainsbourg to explore the emotional frisson between the two characters. He suspects that she may have a greater awareness of what she is accomplishing in a scene than she admits to. "The thing that makes her so good is how conscious she is," he said. "She's strong and sinewy, one of the best actresses I have ever worked with. Once she was able to see what was viable in part, she released her passionate energy.

But she didn't cize Jane Eyre, whereas someone else might have done. She doesn't let Charlotte Bronte In 1985, the director Claude disciple of Francois Truffaut, cast Gainsbourg in his film "L'Effrontee." For her portrayal of a tempest -tossed adolescent, she won a Cesar; the French Oscar. Miller next cast her as the delinquent, precocious teen-ager in "The Little a film based on a story by Truffaut and Claude de Givray. Before going on to "Jane Eyre," she appeared in the original Paris stage production of David Mamet's "Oleanna." Charlotte Gainsbourg plays the title character, an impoverished governess who falls tempestuously in love with her brooding employer, in Franco Zeffirelli's new version of "Jane Eyre." the description not only of Jane Eyre's appearance but also of her guarded personality. "I think what I felt closest to in her character was her way of dealing with people," she said.

"I could easily imagine the sufferings she'd had, not: because I've had the same sufferings but because I could understand how she builds a wall to protect herself from other people." To prepare for the part, Gain- sbourg wrote down a description of how Jane becomes aware of her physical and sexual side. "That was interesting to play," she said, "because she's so can I say, rationally minded? Every time she and Rochester touch, the contact is enormous for her." As the movie proceeds, Jane Eyre's pinched, uncertain mien is gradually replaced by a palpable sensuality. "Charlotte managed by the en end of the film to express en Retrospective covers Squier's stormy career By KIRA L. He's been working on a CD-ROM project to go along with the anthology and has been taking classes in philosophy, art, and theater. The retrospective covers the 45-year-old Squier's career from his first band, Piper, in the late 1970s, to "Tell the Truth." The earliest songs, like Piper's "Who's Your Boyfriend" and "Little Miss Intent," pave the way for the sarcasm and irony Squier later developed in subsequent tracks such as "The Stroke," "Everybody Wants You" and "Don't Say You Love Me." His range always has been impressive; he can go from a basher like "The Big Beat" (from 1980's "Tale of the to introspective moments like "Nobody Knows" (from "Don't Say to playful songs laced with sexual innuendo like "She Goes Down" (from "Creatures of Despite his range, Squier was a late bloomer his first real success came when he was 31. "I certainly think that getting to that level later helped me to some degree," he said. "I didn't start later I just took longer.

I tend to be very methodical for a variety of reasons. I'm more of a plodder." As he matured, so did his songs. He credits part of that to going into therapy when he was 35, around the time of 1986's "Here Now." "I finally figured out that me and my friends weren't going to solve all our problems," he said.
